By Sonya Shellard. I’ve been running accredited coaching courses in the UK for many years now and have been excited to watch them evolve and indeed feel privileged to have been part of that evolution. I am often asked what the essential components of any accredited coaching course should be, to help guide people when making their choice; so, I’ll share here what I think the key questions are that you should ask yourself... 1.Is this an accredited coaching course i.e. one which a professional coaching body, such as the Association for Coaching, has reviewed and assessed the standard and relevance of content, along with the expertise of the those delivering the programme and awarded it with an appropriate certification (such as ACCT). 2.What individual accreditation will I be awarded on completion of this accredited coaching course in the UK? Will I become a Foundation Executive Coach for example? 3.What do I need to do to achieve my individual accreditation – how long will this take me and is there any additional cost involved? What isn’t included in the accredited coaching course fee? 4.Who will be delivering the accredited coaching course to me? What is their experience of coaching? How can I meet them in person or online to see whether their style of delivery engages and inspires me? 5.How innovative and varied are the methods of delivery used on this accredited coaching course in the UK? Has the accredited coaching course provider evolved throughout the years to embrace the latest of technologies and learning methods? Will I have my coaching reviewed and supervised so that I can excel in my coaching practice? Will I be given honest and confidence building feedback to help me develop to my full potential? 6.Who will I be learning alongside? Do the people attending this accredited coaching course Celebrate Diversity? Will the group I learn with be rich in diversity – gender, ages, ethnicity, representing a variety of cultural and organisational backgrounds? How large is the group – large even to provide a rich learning environment but not too large to engulf me? 7.What happens when I complete my initial training? Will I remain part of a cohesive and supportive alumni? Will the Community I join be part of my professional life going forward? 8.Does this accredited coaching course in the UK care about its Social Impact? Does it provide Scholarships on each programme to those who are ambassadors for under-represented groups and a make a difference to society? 9.Will I have fun whilst learning? Will there be Laughter on this accredited coaching course with social interaction and events if I choose to take part in them? 10.Finally, can I try before I buy this accredited coaching course? Will they take the time to get to know me, “meet” me, guide me and answer my questions before I commit to an exhilarating personal and professional development journey? So, when you are asking yourself “Which accredited coaching course in the UK should I choose”, pick up this list and run through it with potential providers. Assess them against these criteria.
